MBA Project - web marketing development for local nano-tech firm
My MBA project, the equivalent of a thesis for us business folks, was internet presence maximization for a local nano-technology firm, Dendritic Nanotechnologies. This was the first time I had really been called upon as an expert in my field and in the beginning the experience was a real eye-opener.
The project was intriguing mostly because I was able to test several theories I had about internet searching and the like, but also because I was dealing with a company whose product was still very new. DNT’s product is dendrimers. Dendrimers are not easy things to describe, much less define, so when I conducted my phone survey to ask people how they searched for them online, I ran into some serious problems.
The team at DNT and I developed a rather concise definition of a dendrimer, and I set out again to determine how people searched online for a product they don’t know exists and don’t know how they can use it. Again I ran into difficulty. I decided to survey people regarding applications instead. I had done enough phone surveys to speak somewhat intelligently about bio technology so I listened to what people did and said, “What if I told you I had a better way to do that?” I felt like a snake oil salesman.
The technique worked though, and I gathered extremely valuable information about how to lead potential customers to DNT’s web site. I also spoke with several consultants who seemed more interested in hearing themselves talk than answering my questions, but they also contributed much to my research.
After the survey data was compiled, the next step was to turn all that into customers coming to the site. A combination of meta keywords, strategic placement of other terms throughout the site, and a little help from Google formed the perfect solution.
Database designed for fictional company as part of BIS 638
One of the requirements for BIS 638 was to design a database for a fictional company. After creating a company and describing its purpose, the task was to design the database. The instructor gave specific requirements about the number of tables, queries, forms and reports. We used Oracle 9i to develop the database and Oracle 6i to develop the forms and reports.
The company my group created was a satellite television service provider. The purpose of the database was to keep track of customers, sales, repairs, product offerings, office locations and vehicles.
After the tables were created and the data entered, the next step was to create an interface for the database. The instructor gave specific requirements for the number and purpose of the forms and reports. Also, we used PL/SQL in the forms and reports. We used both implicit and explicit cursors and master/detail forms and reports.
